Just an update. I think I'll be at West County Saturday (yes, the day after Leopard is released) but then my parents will be with me and they said that for my Christmas present they're going to buy a Mac mini. Come on, Apple! Don't kill it yet!

In the great wealth, the great firmament of this forum's generosity, the particular choice may perhaps be found by future generations as a trifle eccentric, but the mere fact of it -- the prodigal, pure, human kindness of it -- must be seen as a beautiful star in that firmament which shines upon me at this moment.

    ... and a partride in a pear tree :p

I just talked with my girlfriend. She goes to SIUE and confirmed that their bookstore is going to be selling Leopard for the discounted $69 or $79 price (not sure which one, exactly) - BUT they don't expect to have it for a few days after the 26th.

I must have missed something...how is it $69 or $79?

OK, I want a website for business. I want it in my name. I don't expect a huge need for lots of bandwidth (though growth is possible).

I have no idea how to start, from registering the domains, to using my own computer as the site or another, or a 3rd party like asmallorange.

Would a 3rd party have templates, or should I get software to design the pages? should I contract the site out? should I keep asking questions? :p

I have never done anything beyond .mac homepage mickeymouse work, but with guidance could do something pretty well.

I could use some good advice for a novice.

Okay that says your not getting the 4.2.1 firmware to take...

    Get firmware here; http://appldnld.apple.com/iPad/061-9857.20101122.VGthy/iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Note on a windows system you'll need to rename iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.zip to iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Is this what you are doing?

    1). Get the latest TinyUmbrella.
    2). Open TinyUmbrella
3). Plug in your device and save SHSH (make sure 4.2.1 SHSH were saved, if not don't bother continuing.
4). Start TSS Server (If you get errors read the help section or FAQs or comment below typically it fails because you have some kind of web sharing enabled... use google to fix it - your issue really not much I can do...)
    5). Open iTunes
6). Select your device in iTunes
    7). Shift(windows) / Option(Mac) restore -> Select the 4.2.1 ipsw (iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw)

Restore SHOULD error with a 1013 error. Click the "ok's" and close iTunes.

8). With your device sitting with the usb pointing to iTunes (recovery mode), enter DFU by pressing and holding HOME + POWER until your screen goes black... then after a count of 2 (1.5-2 seconds) let go of POWER but keep holding HOME. If all goes well you will see nothing but a black screen. If your timing is even a LITTLE bit off, you will see the apple logo and your phone will boot back into recovery mode... Go back to step 8 and try again.

    Start 'Fix Recovery'
    Click 'Yes'
Your device's screen will turn white and you'll see debug boot information.
Eventually your device will boot into the activation screen.d
    Congrats. You're on 4.2.1 (again)? :)

Nice write up Dav1; good job.

But am I the only one that thinks this is unbelievably overpriced?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/G3-Powerbook-PISMO-500mhz-512mb-40GB-DVD-DL-Burner-WOW-/250788240872?pt=Apple_Laptops&hash=item3a6424dde8#ht_1350wt_907

I couldn't even get that out of my MDD if I tried. Plus the 500MHz Pismo isn't even that fast... trust me. My 500MHz G3 iBook is a total slug when web surfing, and video is nearly impossible, even with MacTubes and maxed out RAM.

Just as an example... I just bought a 333MHz Lombard Powerbook for $5 via a private sale. Yes, $5. It will be here within the next few days. Some of the PPCs in general on eBay are insanely expensive.

Not trying to offend the seller of that Pismo if they are on here... but that price is insane.

nope you are allowed to test prototypes, just not offer them for sale without FCC approval.
As an employee of a phone manufacturer, I just wanted to vouch for that - you can use the devices for testing; you just can't sell them. Absolutely correct.

    Hi,

I am CONSIDERING getting a programmer to help me develop an app for my church. Basically it will be an app to provide the person with information (upcoming events, news, upcoming service, read your bible in a year versus, etc).

I have no idea how to program. I know basic C++ and html/css. Therefore, I need major help. I feel like once the layout is done and once taught how to add information, I would be able to keep it updated.

How do I go about finding a programmer? Is it going to cost me $1,000's of dollars?

    Any information is greatly appreciated.

    Hi guys,

    Just a quick question.

I have tried listening to a variety of music on my iPhone, both iTunes, Play.COM and 320kps (from home CDs), and I would value others impressions of iPhone sound quality.

I normally listen on Ultimate Ears super.fi 5Pro with the iPhone equalisation set to off. For me, it lacks low bass, so I turned on bass booster and although it delivered, the sound was very fuzzy.

Anyone like to suggest whether it's the headphones or iPhone?

    Thanks!

The iBook's screen display 1024x768 and is set to be able to mirror it's own display onto another (show exactly the same image as the actual iBooks' display). However, there is a screen spanning hack (http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html) which does three things.

It lets you run an external display at higher resolutions (easily making it up to a 17 inch monitor's 1280x1024 or whatever it is).

It lets you span the display. This means you can have different things on different displays, they're not merely mirrored.

And finally it voids your warrantee.

iPad 52 will be much better.

Even though that's a random number, there is something about how it sounds that made me laugh and spill beer on my lap.

I remember when Ryan Block left Engadget and people were saying similar things, wondering about Engadget's future. Josh eventually grew into the role and now he's leaving. While it's sad to see him go, I'm sure someone else will eventually fill the spotlight.

BBEdit is overpriced. Don't buy it. I made the mistake of buying it and I don't even use it anymore. I mean it was my favorite text editor... until I discovered Textmate (www.macromates.com). A lot of BBEdit users are moving to Textmate and loving it.

As others said, Jeffrey Zeldman's "Designing with Web Standards" is a great book.

Other really good CSS books include:

"Web Standard Solutions" by Dan Cederholm
"Bulletproof Web Design" by Dan Cederholm
"Professional CSS" by (a few authors)

I second this, TextMate is really the best editor on Mac. I have known a few BBedit guys to switch over, and I myself am a loyal TextMate user. By far the best text editor I have ever used.

Although, the find and replace could be a little deeper. I still have to open up Text Wrangler for that stuff..

Edit: Also, "Designing with Web Standards" is a great CSS book, as mentioned a few times above, definitely give that a lot!
